German Wines
Germany's wines are the most misunderstood in the world. Only a little skill is needed to make acceptable wines in a warm Mediterranean climate in which grapes always fully ripen. In the cooler weather of northern Europe the cheapest wines can also be made according to a more or less unchanging recipe, but producing fine wines in Germany requires not only technical ability, but imagination and a dedication to excellence. The best vineyards lie as far north as grapes can be persuaded to ripen. The Riesling is the great grape of Germany and the majority of the best wines are made from it.
