Rhone red wines vary from the intensely concentrated and tannic, ruby-black or purple-black in youth, to relatively simple, but solid alcoholic fruit juice. The best have depth, length and mature to lingering harmony comparable to the greatest wines of Bordeaux. White wines are in the minority and tend to headiness, but thanks to much improved winemaking can now be as notable as all but the best of the red.
