Languedoc Roussillon
The Languedoc is France's open back door, its melting pot, its link with the outside world. It is France's best-value, most fluid wine region and certainly most important in terms of volume of the wine produced. Its relative freedom from vinous regulation had led to it being called France's New World. The boundary between the southern Rhone Valley and the eastern limit of the Languedoc is a disputed one. With good reason as the quality of the wine made in the Languedoc's eastelly appellation Costires de Nemes has improved so startlingly that many of its glossy Syrah- and Grenache-based wines bear a remakable resemblance to the most luscious Cote du Rhones. Roussillon is so much more than a suffix, being very different both physically and culturally from the Languedoc.
